Series: COUPLE IN MOTION

Transmitting rhythmic instincts

All over the world, dance is the most primitive expression of human civilization. Ancient cave paintings depict dancing figures as early as 3300 BC. Dance was used primarily for ceremonial purposes or to communicate stories.

Till our contemporary times, every society in every country has had some form of dance, from folk, classic to modern dance. Upto now, lots of dances have evolved, creating outstanding geometrical movements and consistent steps and motion.

When a man and woman dance as a couple, there is incredible silent communication between them, irrespective of any frontier. Sen has immersed himself in expressing their feelings through dance. The dynamic colourful relationship that establishes between a man and a woman while in motion intrigues Sen.

In the series “Couple in Motion”, Sen’s mind travels through a variety of dance movements in different parts of the world. He explores the feelings of closeness and rhythmic body movements that a dancing couple experiences when the physical touch reverberates to musical beats and soulful songs.

INDIA’S BLOODY INDEPENDENCEIN 1947

When India was partitioned 1947 to create Pakistan, a new country for Muslims, about 20 million people of Bengal and Punjab were displaced and brutally victimized. Sen’s wealthy, literate family had huge landed property in erstwhile East Bengal, the present Bangladesh, which was carved out to be East Pakistan for Muslims. So for being Hindus Sen’s family was overnight evicted from their home. Without taking any possessions, they fled for their lives amidst people warring over religion, and so became squatted refugees in West Bengal.
