Series: PHANTASM

Inner need

Sen has created a series of mixed-media works on paper, measuring 152 x 102 cm, often mounted. His work, at first glance abstract, nevertheless reveals underlying figurative motifs, thus anchoring his compositions in a subtle reality. This treatment is the visual cue of his abstract with hidden figuratives style.

Driven by a rich imagination and a profound aesthetic sensibility, he seeks to transcend the tangible world. That’s why this series, done in 2020, is called “Phantasm”.

He believes that fantasy alone, without it being rooted in some aspect of realism, may not substitute an idea.

His artistic fantasy is based on the idea that the power of creation can make us forget, if only for a moment, the struggles, wars, cruelty, and jealousies that plague society.

Through his works, he aspires to free us from the prevailing pessimism and open a door to a universe imbued with poetry and escape.

INDIA’S BLOODY INDEPENDENCEIN 1947

When India was partitioned 1947 to create Pakistan, a new country for Muslims, about 20 million people of Bengal and Punjab were displaced and brutally victimized. Sen’s wealthy, literate family had huge landed property in erstwhile East Bengal, the present Bangladesh, which was carved out to be East Pakistan for Muslims. So for being Hindus Sen’s family was overnight evicted from their home. Without taking any possessions, they fled for their lives amidst people warring over religion, and so became squatted refugees in West Bengal.
